Well one of the world’s first PS3 modchip is here the PS3 Stinger, it comes in the form of a little USB dongle which means there is no opening up the console, no soldering and install is a breeze. This little dongle will give you the ability to run 3rd party applications on your PS3 console, make backups of your original games onto your existing PS3 hard drive and also external USB ones and even USB flash drives. The PS3 Stinger PS3 mod chip is compatible with all PS3 consoles, that’s right from the old 60GB phat models right through to the new PS3 slim consoles. Now you will be able to put your whole collection of original PS3 titles onto your hard drive and experience at least twice the speed of loading and no longer have to worry about scratched discs. Another bonus about the PS3 Stinger PS3 modchip is the fact that you can really extend your PS3’s lasers life by using the hard drive to load your games from. Another really big feature of this product is the fact it will now open the door to being able to load homebrew applications on your PS3, we will see the birth of Media Players, even web browsers and much much more for the PS3, the PS3 Stinger modchip opens the doors to massive possibilities with the PS3 console that was just not possible before.
The PS3 Stinger PS3 mod chip has a piece of homebrew software that you load up and will create backups of your original games onto the hard drive, be it the internal one in your console or an external USB one you can hook up, being the PS3 hard drives are quite small the feature of being able to use an external hard drive is great, because you can get a 3.5” 1TB drive quite cheap these days and this would be the best way to go, this will leave your internal hard drive for normal use and once again won’t wear it out. This little homebrew backup manager program is extremely easy to use and fast, the speed that it can backup most games is amazing, some games can be done in a matter of minutes while others can take an hour, it all depends on the size of the game. The interface for the backup manager is nice and we are sure they will improve upon it over he coming months.
Note that your PS3 console will need to be updated to 3.41 for the PS3 Stinger PS3 Modchip to function correctly, they have been optimized for this firmware version and if you are not running it you should either update your PS3 online or go to the Sony website and download their 3.41 firmware onto a USB flash drive and update your console. The best way would be to use the USB flash drive as it’s quite fast. Running the PS3 Stinger PS3 mod chip on an earlier firmware can cause erratic behavior, for example our test machine here would not boot with the dongle plugged in until we updated to the latest 3.41 firmware. Another thing to remember when using the PS3 Stinger is that to play your games off the hard drive you will need to leave one of your original games in the console, not a big problem but just something to remember. The official PS3 Stinger website will have full manuals for using the device, as well as firmware updates and troubleshooting guides.
Something else that has been promised is the PS3 Stinger mod chip will be firmware updateable, so not only will there be updates to their backup manager homebrew software, but there will be core updates for the PS3 Stinger device itself, this ensures that bugs found can be addressed in a firmware update for the dongle device itself. The PS3 Stinger will disable your console from doing automatic updates after installed, this is to prevent any newer firmwares released for the console that could interfere with the way the product works.
While the PS3 Stinger PS3 modchip does allow you to make backups of your original Bluray PS3 games and launch 3rd party applications, it does not allow you to make backups of bluray movies, dvd movies or past Playstation games such as 1 & 2, but with saying that all that most of us want is to be able to take advantage of the homebrew software that will be developed that this device can boot and to make legitimate backups of all our original games onto a hard drive for ease of loading and storage, no more scatted game covers everywhere, no more will the kids scratch and wreak valuable original game discs, and the life of the consoles laser will be significantly increased, as we all know PS3 lasers aren’t cheap especially on the old 60GB units, so there is so many positives to the new PS3 Stinger PS3 modchip and sure more to come with the PS3 homebrew community

In the four years since Sony's PlayStation 3 has been with us, it's never been hacked to play pirated games--until now, that is, if claims by hacker group PS3 Stinger prove true.
The group, reportedly operating from China or Hong Kong, claims it's on the verge of releasing a USB dongle (they're implying it's a 'jailbreak' tool) that lets you play pirated as well as homemade games on a retail PS3 by converting it into a "debug" unit, a special version of the PS3 used by developers and others to access non-retail versions of games.
The dongle comes loaded with software that the hackers claim will let players save games to the PS3's hard drive. All one has to do to get it working, they say, is insert the dongle into the PS3 and boot up.
The hackers also claim the dongle is capable of blocking Sony's mandatory firmware updates, which might otherwise disable the hack, or "brick" (render unusable) the system.
How 'on the verge' are we talking? Off the edge, apparently.
The PS3 has proven the most resilient, hack-proof piece of gaming technology going since its release in November 2006. By comparison, PC games have long been pirate-prone, Sony's PSP handheld can be hacked using periodically updated homebrew code, the DS has been hackable for years using special storage devices, and both the Xbox 360 and Wii were hacked to play pirate versions of games years ago.
The PS3, by contrast, has the so-called Blu-ray deterrent. The average Xbox 360 game runs between 6 and 7 gigabytes, while Wii games run just 2 to 4 gigabytes. The average PlayStation 3 game...well, sizes are all over the map, but Sony's director of technology Tim Moss once bragged God of War III would be 35 gigabytes (I don't know what it actually clocked in at, but presumably in that ballpark). Try illicitly downloading something like that in a day on a typical DSL connection, much less in a week.
The U.S. government recently ruled that jailbreaking--modifying software to "escalate" your privileges in using it--was fair use, and thus exempt from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Some are reading that as government legalization of the process.
